Torkel Klingberg, M.D. Ph.D.Torkel Klingberg, M.D. Ph.D.
Karolinska Institute

Torkel Klingberg, M.D., Ph.D., is a professor of cognitive neuroscience at the Stockholm Brain Institute, at Sweden’s renowned Karolinska Institute.

In 2001, Klingberg founded Cogmed to develop and market working memory training programs based on his breakthrough research demonstrating that working memory capacity can be improved through training.

His research continues to focus on ways in which the human brain deals with attention and working memory, and on how carefully designed training paradigms can be used to augment capacity in different cognitive domains. Klingberg’s findings have been published in scientific journals including Science, Nature Neuroscience, and the Journal of the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry.
Klingberg has gained recognition in the scientific community and the international media, notably in Scientific American and New Scientist. He has received distinctions from the International Neuropsychological Association and has been named “Future Research Leader” by the Swedish Foundation for Strategic Research. In 2006, he was awarded the Philip’s Nordic Prize for outstanding research in the field of Neuropsychiatry. Klingberg also holds a research position at the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences.

Klingberg summarized some of his findings and thoughts in the popular science best seller “The Overflowing Brain”, published by Oxford University Press in 2008.
